Bodmin Jail is located in Bodmin, Cornwall in England.

The jail was originally built for King George 3rd in 1779 by prisoners of war and was designed by Sir John Call. The jail had enough room to accomodate 100 prisoners.

The building which stands today was built in 1860 using 20’000 tonnes of granite from “Cuckoo Quarry” in Bodmin which was fetched by the prisoners.

During World War 1 the Doomsday Book and the Crown Jewels were kept in Bodmin Jail for safe keeping.

In the 150 years Bodmin jail was operational it held 50 public executions. The first execution being in 1785 and the last in 1909. The executioners were paid around £10 per execution.

In 1927 the jail was closed and ever since that day there has been no jail within Cornwall.

Reported Paranormal Activity

Matthew Weekes was a prisoner of Bodmin Jail. It was believed by some that he was wrongly accused of a crime and was imprisoned an innocent man.People visiting the jail have claimed to see Matthew’s ghost wandering the cells.

A lady named Selina Wadge was executed by hanging at the prison because she murdered her child when it was born out of wedlock. Her spirit is said to haunt the prison, grabbing at visiting children and making pregnant women fell a huge amount of remorse.

Many, many more ghosts have been seen, heard and/or felt at Bodmin prison by people visiting the dark and dingy building.

Bodmin Jail has been featured on the paranormal TV program “Most Haunted” and has been a favorite place for numerous groups seeking out paranormal phenomena.
