Robert Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850, and sadly passed away on 3rd December 1894.
Robert Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer. His best-known books include Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Stevenson now ranks among the 30 most translated authors in the world, just below Charles Dickens.
Robert Stevenson and his wife Fanny settled in Bournemouth from July 1884 - August 1887. Stevenson was very ill during this period, often unable to leave the house. Nevertheless, the Bournemouth years marked incredible industry on Robert Stevenson's part when he published and wrote a huge volume of his work.
When Stevenson and Fanny first arrived in Bournemouth they stayed in a few hotels such as Highcliffe Hotel, then they moved to lodgings on Sunnington Rise, West Cliff Gardens. Finally In early April 1885, the Stevensons moved to Skerryvore, the house Thomas Stevenson had bought as a wedding gift for Fanny. Skerryvore was on 61 Alum Chine Road, but was destroyed during the second world war. It was in this house, named after the lighthouse designed by Alan Stevenson, that RLS and Fanny settled for the rest of their stay in Bournemouth.
A garden was designed by the Bournemouth Corporation in 1957 as a memorial to Stevenson, on the site of his Westbourne house "Skerryvore" which he lived in from 1885 to 1887. A statue of the Skerryvore lighthouse is present on the site to this day.
We are now at skerryvore for episode 9 where some strange things seems to happen.
